REVEALED: THE UK REGIONS PAYING THE MOST FOR THEIR ENERGY

• 79 per cent of Brits reveal that gas and electricity bills are the main factors behind rising living costs
• Residents living in Merseyside and North Wales pay the most for gas and electricity at £116 per month
• Eight in 10 (81 per cent) of Brits are not considering improving their home’s energy efficiency

As the UK continues living through the ongoing cost of living crisis, research undertaken by UltraLEDs has revealed the regions that are paying the most for their energy in the UK.

By analysing ONS and UK government data, the lighting supplier highlighted residents living in Merseyside and North Wales were paying the most for gas and electricity in 2021, spending around £116 per month.

While it was households in the East Midlands that spent the least at £108 per month.

The top 10 regions paying the most for gas and electricity per month in 2021 are:

5. London (£114)
6. South East (£114)
7. Southern (£113)
8. South Scotland (£112)
9. West Midlands: (£111)
10. East Midlands (£108)

The research also revealed the top 10 most energy-efficient regions across the UK. Surprisingly, it was London that topped the list of the most energy-efficient regions, as two-fifths (42 per cent) of homeowners scored A-C on the EPC scale.

Residents in the South East came in at a close second, with 41 per cent of homes scoring a rating of A-C.  While residents of Yorkshire proved to be one of the least energy-efficient regions, with just over a third (34 per cent) of homeowners scoring an EPC rating between A and C.

Unsurprisingly, eight in ten (79 per cent) Brits revealed that gas and electricity bills are the main factors behind rising living costs.

Alarmingly, eight in 10 homeowners (81 per cent) were not considering improving their home’s energy efficiency. Over a third (35 per cent) of homeowners said that their home is efficient enough, while over a quarter (28 per cent) said that it would cost too much.

Tom Cain, Technical Engineer at Ultra LEDs commented: “With energy prices and the cost of living set to rise significantly again in October, many of us will be looking for ways we can save money and reduce our annual energy bills.

“One simple way to reduce annual spending through your energy bills is by switching to LED bulbs or LED Strip Lighting around the home. LEDs offer an energy-efficient, money-saving alternative to traditional lighting solutions, and the low-operating temperatures mean they have an increased life span, resulting in enhanced safety and long term cost savings.”

“They require a lot less electricity to run and are also more sustainable in comparison to halogen and incandescent lighting. To detail the previously mentioned lifespan, this is commonly around 50,000 hours, which is 50 times more than a standard incandescent bulb. As a result of this, a bulb or LED strip light with around ten hours of use per day can cost less than £3 a year. With this extended lifespan, the bulbs or LED strips won’t need to be replaced as quickly as traditional lighting, saving money in the long term.”
